The debate regarding the Animal Health Board's aerial dropping of 1080 poison that is going on in the "N.Z. Farmers Weekly" is very interesting.
Reihana Robinson states, in a letter to the editor, that DoC Hauraki conducted a trial that showed that trapping was more effective and less expensive than ground baiting or aerial dropped 1080. The assessment excluded the value of recovered meat, skins or fur. Trapping minimises the risk of harming non target species. Ron Eddy of Wairau Saddle laments the decimation of N.Z. Falcons. Quote Ron: "The bush on the slopes of the mountains is exactly the same as it always has been so those 1080 operations achieved very little apart from killing our falcons". Isn't 1080 a classic case of the risks outweighing the benefits. |

1080 Madness
In the mid-1960s, DOC 1080ed Stewart Island and killed off massive numbers of a large green parrot. They have since spent untold millions trying to bring back this large green parrot from the brink of extinction.
They did the same around Auckland with what they thought was an Aussie parrot, but which turned out to be a NZ one. Duh! In the past 4-5 years they have been killing off all weka on all the islands around the South Coast. Now they are planning to 1080 the pristine Waitutu Forest, which contains large numbers of native birds... at the moment. They will all die and then the Waitutu will be like the rest of the forests in Southland - dead quiet. Obviously DOC have not learned their lesson over the years and prefer to deny the facts. However, they do not have a leg to stand on scientifically, ethically, or any other way and should stop this crap. |

what is being done to the birds and animals above the ground is being transfered to the soil below so many of the benificial soil organisms are dying leaving the pathogenic anerobic organisms to flourish. the next come the plants that depend on a healthy soil to thrive so thay get sick and the "wise people" wonder why then fund scientist to investigate the pathogen that appears in the tree. They take good care not to ask any one who might know the answer so the desecration can continue until our whole forest / bush estate is almost irreparably damageged and our "Clean Green 100% Pure N.Z." brands are totally ruined and with it our best attraction as a tourist destination. P.M. John Key is also Minister for Tourism and as P.M. involved with the factory preparing toxic baits in Wanganui. Does he not see the damage that is being done, especially to his portfolio?

1080 is BIG BUSINESS, that is, a big and growing budget item that is under the total control of DoC, AHB, EW and other bureaucracies and their captive dispensers. Hence the knowledge evidenced by their own science that they are killing large portions of native birds, invertebrates and other native species with every cycle of their aerial poisoning is of little consequence to them. The BIG LOSERS are NZ's native species and the ecosystems of which they are a part.

1080 Usage
It is with great sadness I wish to announce the passing of fairness, honesty and fairplay to be replaced by dishonesty, wastage of taxpayer dollars and decimation of our native species. 1080 is the culprit as it leads to Govt departments, Ministers, Charities such as AHB to create empires that are answerable to noone and can spend multi millions without question as the OIA doesn't apply! How can these organisations go ahead and drop aerially (1080) when 92% of Coasters are against it? Answer: We are in a communist, fascist state! Comrade Key and his cohorts are above the law!

There are a few relevant facts missing here . Proper name for the disease is "BOVINE Tuberculosis" ie. the disease originates from cattle , mainly dairy cattle , and there you have the other interested party in this debate . It is the same disease that decimated the Cape Buffalo herds in Kruger Park , South Africa , after dairy farming appeared on the western boundary of the park .
